Situated on a part of the ancient medieval pilgrim road 'Via Francigena', standing on top of a hill, with a surrounding view of the spectacular Tuscan countryside, it overlooks the famous towers of San Gimignano, only 5 kilometres away. Historically and architecturally, the site is among the most important ones of the Val d'Elsa. It has a long story to tell that is surely documented by the tenth century, but almost certainly began in the Etruscan period.
In fact, several small discoveries dating back to various periods and the location of the agglomeration in a wider area of great archaeological interest confirm the veracity of such a convinction.
It lived its splendor during the Renaissance when the high priest Paolo Cortesi (Rome 1465 - San Gimignano 1510), humanist of great value, prothonotary apostolic, secretary and Breviere of Pope Julius II, made it a center of the humanities as well as his residence, which he called "Castrum Cortesianum", where it housed the most important figures of the time, including Paolo and Lorenzo de 'Medici, the Dukes of Ferrara and Urbino, Pico della Mirandola, Angelo Poliziano, Marsilio Ficino, the Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere ( Pope Julius II) and Alessandro Farnese (Pope Paul III) and numerous other members of the political and cultural elite of the time, giving the center a cultural connotation markedly political and public.

Today, after thorough accurate restoration, the castle is a romantic, suggestif mansion of charm, offering B&B accomodation, that has been awarded the Tuscan 'agriturismo' top classification of three wheat sheaves.
